Which Fabrics Work Best for Outdoor Awnings and Blinds?

21/10/2019

Outdoor fabrics are made for durability, with strong woven fibres that undergo chemical treatment during the manufacturing process. These solution-dyed synthetic fabrics are resistant to stains and mildew. Since dye is added as the yarn is created, the colour penetrates the yarn, preventing the colour from fading or washing away when subjected to the elements.

Outdoor fabrics have evolved from 1960’s vinyl to achieve the look and feel of most indoor fabrics. Today, they offer a level of softness comparable to cotton while having the strength to withstand more than indoor fabrics can. For this reason, outdoor fabrics are increasingly popular for indoor use as well, especially in households with children.

Olefin Fibre/Polypropylene

Olefin fibre is an incredibly durable, man-made material often used in outdoor furniture. Depending on how it’s made, it can be referred to as polyethylene or polypropylene. It is manufactured in a similar process as polyester and nylon. Olefin has a smooth texture, dries quickly and is resistant to weathering, chemicals, stains and mildew, making it great for outdoor applications. However, olefin can be stiff and uncompromising and is not ideal for indoor use.

Canvas

Canvas is a strong, heavy-duty outdoor fabric used to make sails, tents, backpacks, tarps and awnings. Modern canvas fabrics may be made from a variety of materials but is more commonly made using natural fibres such as cotton or linen. Canvas is also used to describe blends of natural fibres, polyester, and acrylics. A major downside of canvas is that it can be prone to mould and mildew compared to other options.

Solution-Dyed Acrylics

Solution-dyed acrylics are among the softest of outdoor fabric options. This fabric is dyed before the yarn is created, making it colour-fast and water-resistant. Solution-dyed acrylics are commonly used in awnings and patio umbrellas. Softer, more porous versions of this fabric are also used for outdoor pillows and cushions. The fabric is soft enough that it can be used indoor, and hardy enough to resist wear and stains.

PVC Mesh

PVC mesh is used for outdoor chairs as this fabric is very strong and does not stretch. Most PVC mesh fabrics are made of vinyl-coated polyester or acrylic yarns, as well as blends of other synthetics. They make a durable, easy-to-clean, colourfast and highly durable outdoor fabric that is resistant to mildew growth. However, it is not soft to the touch and is generally only used in outdoor settings.
