Choosing Blinds for Wet Areas in the Home

24/12/2019

When choosing blinds for your kitchen, bathroom and laundry, the challenge is choosing a product that looks stylish and can withstand these harsh environments. Blinds in wet areas must be resistant to the damp environment. Make the wrong choice and you may wind up with problems like mould, fading, damage and blinds not lasting.

It’s worth doing your homework to select the right blinds for your bathrooms from the start or consulting an expert for advice. Below we look at different types of blinds and whether they’re suitable or whether you should avoid them.

Fabric Blinds

When choosing blinds for wet areas avoid fabrics. Materials like cotton are highly susceptible to mould. Any humidity you can feel in the air from a steamy, wet room will cling to fabric blinds, making them damp. Any damp environment can grow mould if not regularly cleaned. Mouldy window furnishings are bad for a variety of reasons. Not only does mould quickly deteriorate the blind, but it can cause serious health problems, particularly for asthmatics.

Wooden Venetian Blinds

Stay away from wooden blinds in wet areas as they’ll only absorb moisture and quickly buckle and break. However, if you do love timber venetian blinds or have a wooden aesthetic running throughout your home, opt for faux wooden options in wet areas. Luxaflex Woodmates venetian blinds provide all the aesthetics of natural wooden venetian blinds but are made from polyresin, which is much better suited to environments with high humidity, heat or sun.

Aluminium Venetian Blinds

Aluminium shutters are an effective, durable solution that look as beautiful as they are practical. They are easy to operate for superb light control and privacy, and incredibly easy to wipe clean. A quick twist of the wand allows you to effortlessly control your blinds. With a wide range of products, colours, finishes and slat widths to choose from, you can transform your wet area interior to complement your style, while ensuring the moisture in the room will never damage or reduce the lifespan of your blinds.
