The colder months call for a little bit of preparation and some extra work to keep your home warm and cosy. But did you know that you can make a significant difference without even turning the heater on? Check out these tips on improving the heat retention and warmth of your home.
1. Install custom blinds or curtains
The first thing we recommend is that you install insulating blinds or curtains throughout your home. The reason being that windows account for a staggering 42-45% of heat loss. Luxaflex Duette blinds, for instance, are specially made to help with this problem. With a unique honeycomb design, they keep cold air out and trap warm air in. Consumer NZ has rated this blind the most effective blind for insulation in New Zealand.
2. Keep curtains and blinds closed when it gets cold
Closing your windows and blinds when the temperature drops isn’t a big ask, but it can make a big difference. This is because a house is most vulnerable to cold air during the coldest parts of the day. So, by actively keeping your blinds and curtains closed at these times, you'll have an easier time of maintaining the temperature. We recommend closing your curtains or blinds just before the sun drops. With automated curtains or blinds you can set a timer or sensor so this happens automatically.
3. Allow sunlight to enter
While it’s important to close curtains and blinds during the coldest parts of the day, it’s also a good idea to let sunshine in when possible. Be sure to open your window fittings from around noon till 3pm, as this is when the sun produces the most heat. Not only will this warm your home internally, but it will bring a sense of freshness in too.
